Hot weather brings the same question up every year. Should I be taking electrolytes? It tends to surface properly once the heat has been around for more than a day or two, when the novelty wears off and the tiredness sets in.
It's a fair thing to wonder, and the honest answer is more nuanced than either camp, the "you must supplement" crowd or the "just drink water" crowd, tends to let on. So let's take a proper look at what electrolytes actually do, when they genuinely matter, and when your body is already managing perfectly well on its own.

What Electrolytes Actually Do In Your Body
Electrolytes are minerals, mainly sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride, that carry a small electrical charge. That charge is what allows your muscles to contract, your nerves to send signals and your cells to hold the right amount of fluid.
Think of them as the wiring behind the scenes. You don't tend to notice them when everything is working well. You notice when things are a bit off, because that's when the cramps, the headaches or the general dizziness show up.
When you sweat, you lose water and a small amount of sodium along with it. On a normal day that loss is modest and your usual meals cover it without any extra thought. Across a run of hot days, or during a long walk, a run or a day spent working hard outdoors, the losses build up. That's when it's worth paying a little more attention.
Sodium And Potassium Aren't The Same Job
Sodium and potassium don't do the same job in your body. Sodium sits mainly in your bloodstream and the fluid around your cells. Potassium sits mainly inside the cells themselves.
Water moves towards wherever the sodium and potassium levels are higher. So if you've plenty of sodium outside your cells but not much potassium inside them, water tends to stay outside the cells too. That's part of why you can feel puffy or bloated on the outside while your cells themselves are still short of fluid underneath.
Most shop bought electrolyte drinks contain a lot of sodium and very little potassium. If you've had a proper sweat, on a run or a hot day working outside, that sodium is doing a useful job. But if you're reaching for one just because it's warm out, not because you genuinely need it, you're adding more sodium to a body that usually has enough already, while potassium, the mineral that actually pulls water into your cells where it's needed, gets left out almost entirely.
Why This Matters More In Midlife
If you're perimenopausal or menopausal, this balance shifts under you regardless of what you eat or drink.
As oestrogen and progesterone decline, the systems in your kidneys that manage sodium and fluid don't work quite the way they used to. Oestrogen has a hand in the pathway that controls how much fluid your body holds onto, and progesterone normally acts as something of a natural counterbalance to salt retention.
When both decline, the body tends to hold onto more sodium and more water than it once did.
That's a large part of why bloating and puffiness can feature in midlife in a way they never used to, even without any change to your diet. It isn't just water sitting where it should. It can be water sitting in the wrong place, outside the cells rather than inside them, which is why you can feel puffy and still feel undernourished and tired at the same time.

If you do decide a product is warranted, it's worth having a proper look at the label, because a lot of popular electrolyte tablets and sachets contain more sugar than people expect, alongside a sodium-heavy, potassium-light formula.

How much added sugar is in a single serving
Whether it contains artificial sweeteners you'd rather avoid
The sodium content against how much you actually need, based on what you've lost
Whether potassium and magnesium feature in any meaningful amount, or whether it's sodium doing most of the work
If you're managing blood sugar, insulin resistance or blood pressure, this matters. A sugary, sodium heavy drink taken when it isn't genuinely needed can send your blood glucose somewhere you didn't intend and can add to a sodium load your kidneys are already finding harder to shift.
Getting The Balance Through Food
The reassuring news is that most of this balance is manageable through what's already on your plate.

Fluid and sodium drop, which reduces your blood volume slightly, which means your heart works a little harder to circulate blood, which can feel like fatigue, a mild headache or that heavy, hard-to-place tiredness by mid afternoon. Left unaddressed, it can progress to dizziness, muscle cramps and, eventually, proper heat exhaustion.
Catching it early is simple. Catching it late is a lot less pleasant, so it's worth listening to those early signals.
What To Do In Practice
Start with water and food. Most of what your body needs on a warm day is already available through a normal, balanced diet.
Prioritise potassium alongside sodium. Especially in midlife, when the two matter more relative to each other than either does alone.
Match your fluid intake to what you're actually doing. A quiet day indoors is different from a day of hard graft in full sun.
Save electrolyte products for genuine need. Long duration exercise in heat, heavy manual work outdoors, or illness with vomiting or diarrhoea.
